Hurricane Ivan Damage
On September 16th, 2004 hurricane Ivan hit the gulf coast as a catagory 3 storm with top winds of 130 mph. Fortunately for those of us on highway 30-A, the eye of the storm passed about 120 miles west near Gulf Shores AL. There was very little structural damage to most of the beach home rentals in Seagrove Beach, Seaside, and Watecolor. The beach however, had significant erosion. There was not a wooden beach walkover left in South Walton County. Below are some photos of the area taken about one week after Ivan's devastation of the gulf cost.
Seaside walkover
Broken walkover.
Most of the walkovers look like this one.
Those familiar with Seaside will recognize this walkover.

The dune height averages 30 feet. The wave/surge height was in the mid twenties.
Seaweed on the beach. Dirty beach sand.
The sand has a black/dirty look. With time the beach will heal it's self to the clean sugar white sands we all love.
Lots of seaweed and other debris left on the beach
